Prelude

Gibran Alcocer composes piano music alone, in Mérida, Yucatán. He is self-taught. He records each piece at home, on a single instrument, and releases only those he finishes. Each is named in the order it begins. The numbers between are kept private — silences, for now.

Movement I · Mérida, Yucatán

2022

Julio · the first release

The first composition he releases is Idea 10, on a Sunday in July 2022. He is nineteen years old. He has no producer, no label, no engineer. He records the piece at home — in Mérida, in the heat, on the upright piano in his bedroom — and uploads it himself.

It is a slow, three-minute piece in Do menor, the same key in which he will write almost every Idea after it. The numbering is not chronological in the obvious sense; it tracks the order in which each composition was begun, not the order in which they were finished. Idea 10 is the tenth he started; it is the first he allowed himself to release.

2023

Junio · the unexpected stage

A year later, in June 2023, a Dutch hardstyle producer named Atmozfears takes Idea 1 — quiet, unaccompanied piano, written for the inside of a small bedroom — and adapts it as the closing anthem of Defqon.1, a midnight festival in Biddinghuizen attended by tens of thousands.

A piece of bedroom piano, written in Do menor and never intended to leave the room, is played at full volume to a field of fifty thousand people. The composer is not in attendance. He learns about it the next morning, on his phone, in Mérida.

Movement III · Hamburg, Germany

2025

Junio · the Grand Hall, Elbphilharmonie

On the twelfth of June 2025, three years after the first release, he plays a public concert for the first time outside Mexico — the Großer Saal of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, a hall designed by Herzog & de Meuron in white plaster and glass.

Idea 25, written that previous winter with the Italian pianist Andrea Vanzo, is performed for the first time. The room sits in silence between phrases. He is twenty-two years old. The bedroom recording, the hardstyle anthem, and the concert hall are all the same composition system, three years apart.
